Lessons & Courses 

We offer:

  • Tuition by a native English speaking Oxford graduate with over 20 years of teaching experience in Hong Kong

  • Small classes with a maximum of 5 students or one-to-one lessons

  • Convenient location, 130 metres from North Point MTR Exit A2

  • Friendly pricing policy that includes credits for five lessons of leave, and refunds or make-up lessons for typhoons and black rain storms.

Regular weekly lessons for school students

Various classes running from September to June with breaks for festivals. For effective learning, students are taught in small classes with material designed for their level. 

Fees for primary school students are HK$660 for 4x1 hour lessons (4 hours in total).

Fees for secondary school students are HK$990 for 4x1.5 hour lessons (6 hours in total).

Classes include:

  • English for P5 and P6 

  • Meaningful tasks and sympathetic feedback so that primary school youngsters can develop their English without losing their enthusiasm for learning. Reading and writing tasks follow typical Hong Kong patterns while frequent practice is given in asking and answering questions so that all students develop their interview skills.

  • English for F1 to F3 Students 

  • Classic and contemporary short texts to entertain, inform, and develop language skills while generating and inspiring written and spoken task prompts. Grammar and vocabulary exercises play their role as we help junior students establish the foundation they need to reach their full potential in higher forms.

  •  English for F4 to F6 Students 

  • Our lessons are closely aligned to the DSE. Students will learn how to answer the comprehension questions, write the text types, listen to the audio cues, manage the data files, and participate in the discussions that frequently occur in the DSE exams. Our small classes allow us to give immediate feedback on style and content and correct spoken and written grammar and vocabulary errors.

Summer courses 2024

During June, July and August 2024, there will be various courses for all age groups to develop written and spoken fluency (including interview skills) and world knowledge using fiction and non-fiction texts; courses also cover DSE Reading, Writing, Listening, Integrated skills, and Speaking. Course and lesson lengths will vary but the fees will be based on our standard rate of HK$165 per person per hour in a small class of four or five.

English for work and leisure 

We can work with you one-to-one to improve any aspect of your English. It could be writing for your job, preparing for a job interview, pursuing your leisure interests, or just conversing with friends and relatives from overseas. Tutorials can be face-to-face or via Zoom. We can use your own writing and material or we can supply material that is suitable for you. Fees are HK$350 per hour during offpeak times (weekdays before 4.00pm) and HK$600 per hour at other times (Saturday, Sunday and weekdays after 4.00pm).

IELTS preparation lessons - adults welcome 

There are many online resources to help IELTS test takers prepare for their exams, for example ieltsliz.com and the British Council's IELTS Coach.  We believe that these online resources and the IELTS past papers, readily available on Carousell, are the most cost effective way to prepare for the Reading and Listening tests.  The role for Tutorial Field is to work one-to-one with test takers to prepare for Writing Tasks 1 & 2 and the Speaking tests.  Fees are HK$350 per hour during offpeak times (Monday to Friday before 4.00pm) and HK$600 per hour at other times (Saturday, Sunday, and weekdays after 4.00pm.)

Experienced qualified teacher

All courses are designed and taught by Paul Stables, the founder of Tutorial Field. Paul is a native English speaking Oxford graduate with a BA Hons in Philosophy, Politics, and Economics; he also has an MEd in English Language Teaching from the University of Sheffield.
 
Paul has more than 20 years of experience working in local universities, tutorial centres, and commercial companies. Since 2018, he has been a part-time lecturer at the Centre for Applied English Studies at the University of Hong Kong. His children attended local secondary schools and took the HKDSE, one of his children went on to study at the University of Hong Kong and another went to the Education University.  With his family's experience he understands the limitations of the local education system very well.
 
Paul's writing has appeared in articles, books, journals and websites published by the National University of Singapore, The University of Brunei Darussalam, Hong Kong University Press, Hong Kong Baptist University, the South China Morning Post and the Hong Kong Standard.
